Skyblock and OneBlock both drop you in the void with almost nothing. The difference is what you start with and where new blocks come from. In Skyblock you get a tiny island and have to build machines to make more blocks. In OneBlock you get exactly 1 block, and it refills every time you break it.
What is Skyblock?
Skyblock is the older mode. The classic map from 2011 gives you a small dirt island with a tree, a chest with some lava and ice, and nothing else. Every new block has to be made. You build a cobblestone generator from lava and water, grow trees for wood, and slowly turn a few blocks into a base.
Skyblock rewards planning. Most of the early game is about building farms and generators so the island can produce on its own.
What is OneBlock?
OneBlock took off in 2020. You stand on a single block above the void. Break it and a new one appears in its place, a different block each time. Dirt and logs come first, then stone, ores, chests and rarer blocks as you go. Everything you build comes out of that one block.
OneBlock is faster to start. There is no generator to build before you can play. You mine from the first second, and the block itself decides what you get next.
The main differences
- Start: Skyblock gives you a small island and a chest. OneBlock gives you 1 block.
- Where blocks come from: in Skyblock you build generators and farms. In OneBlock the block refills itself.
- Pace: Skyblock is slow and planned. OneBlock is fast and full of surprises.
- Progress: Skyblock grows with your machines. OneBlock grows with how much you mine, because the block gets better over time.
- Who it suits: Skyblock fits builders who like engineering. OneBlock fits players who want to jump in and see what drops next.
Is OneBlock a kind of Skyblock?
Yes. OneBlock is a Skyblock variant. Both are void survival on a floating island, and many server lists file OneBlock under Skyblock or tag the 2 together.
Is Hypixel SkyBlock the same thing?
No. Hypixel SkyBlock is its own game mode with a big shared world, custom items and RPG style progression. It borrows the name and the private island, but plays very differently from classic Skyblock or OneBlock.
Which one should you play?
If you want to start mining right away and like not knowing what comes next, play OneBlock. If you enjoy designing farms and generators from scratch, play Skyblock. Plenty of players like both and switch between them.
Where OneBlock goes on EcoSky
EcoSky is a free OneBlock server for Minecraft Java Edition. Our block is called the Core, and you choose what it drops by picking a Core Track like Homestead, Ores, Ocean or Nether. Around it there is a full story with NPCs, custom fishing, mob masks, minions and an island leaderboard, so it keeps some of that Skyblock feeling of building something that grows on its own.
Join at play.ecosky.net on any Java version from 1.9 up. It is free, with no mods or downloads.
